November 2020, 2
On February 2020, 2 (Thursday), the “Fish Classroom” was held by Prof. Toshio Katsukawa of the Institute for Promotion of Industry-Academia Regional Collaboration and Mr. Chiba, a veteran fisherman, and the children deepened their understanding of fishing and eating fish.
This initiative has been carried out since 29 for nursery school children in Sumida Ward as a "local production for local consumption project" in collaboration with Kesennuma Shinkin Bank and Tokyo Higashi Shinkin Bank. This time, we used Skype to connect the Sanriku Satellite and the nursery school, and Mr. Chiba, a veteran fisherman from Kesennuma, explained to the children how to catch swordfish (longline fishing) and the daily life of fishermen.
The children watched Mr. Chiba start talking on the screen, and were surprised but eagerly watched.
After that, after touching real fishing gear and fish, we ate croquettes made with fresh swordfish from Kesennuma for school lunch.
The university mainly prepared food education content, Shinkin Bank was in charge of procurement of raw materials, and Sumida Ward was in charge of the day's operation.
Visiting classes and experiential learning such as the “Fish Classroom” are experiences that leave a strong impression on children, and are expected to have an impact on parents as well.
At the Sanriku Satellite, we would like to continue planning the “Fish Classroom” visiting classes and hands-on learning that will lead to the spread of fish consumption.
