On November 2019, 11 (Thursday), an on-site class was held for 7 37th graders from Kesennuma Municipal Hashikami Elementary School. This class was planned as part of the "Integrated Study Time" class to teach children about marine litter and plastic waste.
First, the lecturer, Associate Professor Keiichi Uchida (Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Faculty of Marine Resources and Energy), asked, "How much plastic waste is in the world's oceans?" I learned that "Where do you come and go?" can be considered from the direction of ocean currents and winds in Japan and the world. After that, we heard from the professor about domestic and international efforts and challenges in marine litter management.Learning that there are countries in the world working together to solve problems, the children thought about what they could do to keep the ocean clean.
Hashikami Elementary School actually conducts surveys of marine litter from the cleanup activities of "Iwaizaki" near the school. .
It was a precious time that I felt that it was very important to increase the number of friends who can share their thoughts with the young generation like them.Thank you to everyone at Hashikami Elementary School.
