【Teacher】

Mr. Shoha Lou (Vice President, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Professor, Department of Ocean Policy and Culture)

【Overview】
Since ancient times, coastal fishing village areas have been supported and developed by the traditional industry of fishing and fisheries. However, due to the decline of the fishing industry and the hollowing out of the fishing industry since the 1990s, some fishing villages are now facing the risk of collapse. It has been a long time since the question of how to overcome this problem has been raised, but the ``maritime industry'' is now attracting attention once again. This is because in March 2022, "maritime promotion" was adopted as one of the basic policies to promote the economic revitalization of fishing villages in the New Fisheries Basic Plan and the Long-Term Plan for the Development of New Fishing Ports and Fishing Grounds. In the future, the true value of the maritime industry will be questioned, including how to effectively and efficiently promote the maritime industry and how to establish it as a new local industry in fishing villages. In this seminar, we would like to return to the origins of regional economic revitalization in coastal fishing villages and reconsider what the maritime industry is, the significance of maritime industry promotion, and the challenges it faces.
