This is the lecture report of the XNUMXth "Highly Specialized Career Formation Theory I/II"

2014.03.06

On Friday, February XNUMX, XNUMX, the XNUMXth Advanced Specialized Career Formation Theory was held on the XNUMXnd floor of Shiratakakan, Shinagawa Campus.

The lecture, presentation, and question-and-answer session proceeded smoothly under the chairmanship of Professor Matsuyama of the Career Development Office.

Lecture on Advanced Specialized Career Development Theory

Deputy Director Kanda of the Career Development Office gave a lecture titled "Social Acceptance and Career Support for Doctorate Graduates".He explained in an easy-to-understand manner the relationship between graduate schools and faculties, and the impact on the training of university teachers and researchers, along with the political background of the times.

At the time, when the purpose of graduate schools was to train university teachers and researchers, only a very small number of students who wanted to become researchers went on to graduate schools. In addition, the graduate school accepted only as many students as needed by university faculty and researchers.Afterwards, the policies of ``quantitative improvement of graduate schools'' and ``prioritization of graduate schools'' brought about increases in budgets and quotas for universities. In addition, the number of postdoctoral researchers continued to increase due to the ``1 postdocs plan'' associated with these, but no thought was given to what would happen after that. The number of university faculty members and public research institutes continues to decline, and the gates to university faculty members and researchers are becoming narrower.
Overseas, there are many doctoral degree holders, including the top executives of companies, and the situation is completely different from Japan.I would like to see more people with strong research and technological development skills go out into the world and play an active role. The purpose of the lecture on advanced specialized career development theory is to enable graduates who have completed a doctoral course to enter society smoothly and play an active role.I believe that the graduate school problem can be solved if the three parties of university teachers, companies, and PD/DC can change their respective problems and become like other countries.
I want everyone to know that there is also a way to play an active role in society after graduating from graduate school. The Career Development Office offers a variety of programs, so please feel free to contact us.

[Q/A] What is the response status of the company side?
As companies begin to think about hiring doctoral students, I get the sense that personnel system reforms to that end are progressing, albeit slowly. We expect further improvements to be accelerated in the future.

In addition, Professor Matsuyama commented, "Even at university, I don't think there are many opportunities to listen to the content."

Presentation by a graduate student

◆Mr. Tomohiro Nishimura (MCXNUMX) made a presentation titled ``What I felt after taking a lecture on career development theory for advanced specialties''.

Ms. Nishimura has already finished her job hunting, so she made a presentation about how the highly specialized career development theory was very useful even though it may not be the original target audience.

When I was an undergraduate, I thought about getting a job easily, and I feel that even as an MC, I was neglectful in gathering information for job hunting because I was busy with research. Now that she thinks about it, she thinks she could have had a little more choice.
I didn't even know what a postdoc was, but I was able to actually talk to corporate researchers and get the chance to learn about various jobs.In particular, his lecture from the interviewer's point of view was impressive, and he was able to know what he needed. He believes that it was very meaningful to be able to obtain various information through his lectures. He believes that if he had taken the lectures earlier, he would have been able to use them in his job hunting. Therefore, I especially want undergraduate students to listen to this class.

◆Mr. Masahiro Sato (DCXNUMX) made a presentation titled 'Research subject long-term internship'.

The theme was "How can a doctor make the most of a long-term internship?"

During the training period, I was able to make use of my strong programming skills and my attitude of emphasizing theory in my work. But most of it was her first time, and it felt fresh and a lot of fun.His Career Development Office gave me the opportunity to improve myself and help me increase my experience. On the contrary, I think that I was able to play a role in conveying the image of the doctor to companies.
On the other hand, as an improvement point of the Career Development Office, we should try to improve the image of long-term internships and communicate that we can contribute to the development of research. In addition, I think it would be very effective for people who handle living things and people who board ships to have a place where they can exchange information on an equal footing with people who have experienced internships.

[Q/A] Considering the balance with research, when should a DC participate in a long-term internship?
It is true that it was difficult to balance long-term internship and research, but I don't think it was a big problem once I actually overcame it.Actually, I experienced it at DCXNUMX, but anyway, I'm glad that I was able to do it early.

For this year's final lecture

Mr. Segawa from the Career Development Office gave a lecture titled "PD Career Development from My Perspective".
At the beginning, Mr. Segawa introduced himself by saying that he has loved keeping animals since he was a child, and that he was thinking of working in this field or becoming a musician in the future.

During the summer vacation of my student days, I helped with research with my teacher, worked at a pearl farm, and had the opportunity to learn how to do research in Choshi. It was a very good experience. Also, after he got a job at a company, he was able to experience a year and a half of testing and research at a fish farm.I think that what he got here became the seeds of his later life. You may think that there is a risk in doing various things, but if you go to the site, it will work out.
Can a PhD work in a company? You may have doubts, but I think anyone can do it.It's fun to do what you're good at (the job you want to do), but don't do what you don't like. But there are things you can love about things you don't seem to like, and there are things you can't like that you don't like.
It's important to look at things positively, and if you set goals and work efficiently, things can go well. The importance of taking on challenges and persevering and working hard toward goals was commonly mentioned in the lectures.Even if the environment changes, if you make an effort, you can produce results in a short time, so I want everyone to do their best.

At the end, Professor Matsuyama said, "I believe that people experience various setbacks, but they grow by overcoming them. It is important to take on challenges without fear of failure and make use of them as a source of inspiration." This concludes the last lecture of the year.
