This is the lecture report of the 26rd "Highly Specialized Career Formation Theory I/II" (FYXNUMX)

2014.06.03

On May XNUMX, XNUMX (Thursday), the XNUMX XNUMXrd Advanced Specialized Career Formation Theory was held on the XNUMXnd floor of the Shirataka Building on the Shinagawa Campus.

"The front line of pearl farming"
Mr. Kiyohito Nagai (Director, Mikimoto Pearl Research Institute)

At the beginning, Prof. Kanda made an opening speech, and the baton was handed over to Prof. Segawa, the moderator.
Currently, Professor Segawa is a professor at the Faculty of Bioindustry, Tokyo University of Agriculture in Abashiri.

Introduction of Mr. Nagai by Mr. Segawa

I was in the same laboratory with Mr. Nagai, and I had the same interest in playing the cello, so I had known him well for a long time.Mr. Nagai obtained a dissertation doctorate while continuing his research activities at a company.

After Prof. Segawa said, "I want you to learn how research at a private company is different from research at a university," Mr. Nagai took the podium.

Pearls are the only gems made by living things

At the beginning, there was an introduction of Mikimoto Co., Ltd. Mr. Kokichi Mikimoto, the founder, and Dr. Yoshikichi Mitsukuri, who taught pearl farming. The history of pearl farming began in the XNUMXth century, and was initially recognized as amulets and souvenirs. By around XNUMX, pearl farming technology was almost complete, and Japanese technology was at the forefront of the world.
Cultured pearls are made using the functions of organisms in the aquatic environment.Specifically, it is made by nucleus insertion surgery in which a pearl nucleus made from a small piece of mantle and shell is transplanted into the body of the shell. This technology was developed in Japan about XNUMX years ago and is now used all over the world.

Mr. Nagai has been very interested in seashells since he was a student, and when he was looking for a job after graduation, he heard about Mikimoto. “At the time, there were no job vacancies, but I was able to get a job at the company by boldly taking on the challenge,” he said about his job hunting activities.

For good quality pearl farming, it is important to constantly check the sea environment and manage the health of shellfish.

In the XNUMXs, domestic production of Akoya pearls plummeted to one-third.There were two factors for this.

(XNUMX) A new type of red tide (heterocapsa red tide) occurred in large numbers in Ago Bay.
This new type of red tide does not color seawater, and even tens to hundreds of cells can adversely affect shellfish, making it difficult to distinguish them from harmless plankton. However, it was found that shellfish sensitively reacted to this harmful plankton, leading to the development of "shellfish lingual" in collaboration with Professor Honjo of Kyushu University. The idea changed to having living things teach us about environmental changes in the sea.

② A disease (red spot) has occurred
In addition to the damage caused by the new type of red tide, illnesses emerged. As a result of a joint investigation with Kyushu University, this was also found to be an infectious disease.I was able to discover a method of suppressing disease using low-temperature fishing grounds, and decided to publish this as a paper.

Various initiatives of Mikimoto

We have been involved in various research and activities together with the university.I am keenly aware that collaboration between universities and companies will continue to be extremely important for the sustainable development of industry and the development of new industries.

  • –In collaboration with the university and the prefecture, we have established a farm in Ainoshima, Fukuoka Prefecture, which breeds natural shellfish seedlings.
  • – In order not to pollute the sea, all the leftover pearls are used for food, fertilizer, etc.
  • –In order to inspect the quality of pearls, we have developed our own non-destructive inspection equipment.
  • –As part of marine education using pearls, we are holding an observation meeting with the University of Tokyo.

Yell to students

It is very difficult to acquire research skills after entering a company. When you get a job in a company, you will be given various challenges. At that time, what you have learned will be very useful.

"Everyone, please do your best to contribute to society," he encouraged the participants.

-Q&A session

This was followed by a question and answer period.
Q/A-1 How do you respond when you discover an abnormality in the sea with "Shell-Lingual"?
Q/A-2 Can cultured pearls be made from snails?
Q/A-3 When it turns out that the condition of shellfish is bad, are the countermeasures at the site automated?
Q/A-4 What is the definition of healthy state of pearl oysters?

At the end, Mr. Segawa said, "It is important to acquire the skills properly. If you do that, you will be able to see where you can play an active role. Mr. Nagai taught me that there are still possibilities for places where I can play an active role." and concluded the lecture.
