~ Create a mechanism to change Japanese fisheries with the knowledge of research ~
Mr. Takashi Namba Ph.D. (Marine Science), Leave a Nest Co., Ltd. Research Division
-Technical sales to sell marine equipment to the world-
Dr. Yusaku Kokubun (Marine Science)
JFE Advantech Corporation Ocean and River Division Trade Office
First, Mr. Kanda, General Manager of the Career Development Office, gave an opening address, saying, "Today, we will announce two alumni of Ocean University who are currently working in sales."
Next, Mr. Takashi Namba took the podium with the introduction of Project Professor Shiotani, who acted as moderator.
Mr. Namba first asked the attendees at the venue, "Is there anyone who can tell you the dream you want to talk about?"There was a self-introduction that a certain manga inspired him to become a navigator. However, as I saw and heard about various issues related to the fishery industry, my thinking changed little by little. There was an explanation that it was the reason why I decided to go on to graduate school.
When I was debating whether to become a researcher or go into the private sector, I decided to get a job at a fish market because I remembered the origins that made me choose my current path. However, he was able to experience the entire series of processes in the fisheries industry, including production, processing, distribution, and sales, and was able to see what kind of problems were faced in the field. It has also become clear that in the field, in many cases, know-how is being built using only in-house technology. His experience at that time is still my treasure.
Next, he explained that the knowledge researched and developed at the university has not reached the field, and that there is no system in place to use the research results of the university in the field. Also, at that time, I met Leave a Nest, and was introduced that all employees are master's or above, and half of them are researchers in various fields, with doctoral degrees.
I thought that at Leave a Nest, science bridges in various fields would solve my problems. My current job is to find partners in universities and research institutes and provide a place where both sides can communicate in easy-to-understand language in order to realize the needs of companies and workplaces.I am involved in more than XNUMX projects a year, but my own axis has consistently been to "communicate science in an easy-to-understand manner."
Whether you are in an academic position or a research position, you can solve various problems as long as you can communicate science in an easy-to-understand manner. So, I would like to ask you again about your dreams. My dream is "to face the challenges of the Japanese fisheries industry as a communicator who appropriately conveys research knowledge to others", and I am working to realize this dream.I hope that you too will be able to convey your dreams through messages.
At the end of the lecture, he said, "Everyone's research will definitely be useful to society. And there is always a place and a partner to make use of it. Let's discover the power of easy-to-understand communication with me." was concluded.
We then moved on to the question and answer session.
QXNUMX: What made you decide whether to become a researcher or go to a private company? Also, how do you raise funds to turn the education business into a business?
AXNUMX: There were many connections outside the university through part-time jobs.I now think that observations at the fish market were part of my research.I came to think that if I really like research, I should be able to choose my research field more freely. In addition, Leave a Nest is also researching the commercialization of environmental education, and the issue is how to make it a sustainable business. (Mr. Namba)
Next, Mr. Yusaku Kokubun took the podium.
First, he introduced himself about his experience of studying in Canada and working at a research institute in Germany. In addition, he said that he joined JFE Advantech before obtaining his doctorate, and was introduced to JFE Advantech's company profile, business content, and product overview.
I've always liked mechanical things, and even before I joined the company, I wanted to tell someone about this kind of improvement, and I wanted to create a device with this kind of function. Then, I started to think that I would like to make it myself and connect it to my business. When I actually joined the company and became the sales side, I found that users who want standard products want highly reliable and stable products, and users who want special equipment want newer equipment with special functions. Do you get it.In sales, we have to deal with both types of customers, and I thought that I could make use of not only my research at university, but also my experience in the nautical department.
Next, there was an explanation of the various operations of sales and the abilities and skills required for them, explaining that not only one ability but multiple abilities and skills are required, and comprehensive sales activities with not only product knowledge but also plus alpha was explained as being necessary. In addition, regarding the relationship between research at graduate school and overseas and corporate activities, not only study but also work experience and contact with researchers at the site are valuable, and communication skills such as conversation skills and cultural understanding are valuable. I was told that I was raised.
The experience of racing yachts, lifesaving, and the yacht club after becoming a member of society is also a plus.Since we do not know when and where the background information will be needed, it is very important to collect various information in advance.I think that having a lot of such experience will be advantageous in various situations.
In closing, he said, "The ocean field is a field where comprehensive strength is tested, and it is also a chance to experience technology that can be used not only in research but also in business. ”, ending the lecture.
Next, the two speakers stepped forward and moved to a Q&A session with Professor Shiotani and the participants.
QXNUMX: When you were a student, what did you think of a sales job?
AXNUMX: When I was a student, I never thought of working in sales.Where I am now has a very wide range of work, and it may be a little different from general sales. (Mr. Kokubun)
I had a strong desire to contribute to the fisheries industry, so anything from sales to planning was fine. His business at the fish market was tough but fun. (Mr. Namba)
QXNUMX: How did you think about your future when you were an undergraduate?
AXNUMX: I didn't look too far away, I was just doing yachting and lifesaving.I focused on what I could do now and worked hard to create something far away. (Mr. Kokubun)
I didn't have a dream and was worried about job hunting, but I still worked hard in the cutter club. (Mr. Namba)
QXNUMX: Why did you go to graduate school after going on to the advanced course?
AXNUMX: I had been aiming for a major course since I entered school. He liked machines and wanted to use them more, so he went to graduate school. (Mr. Kokubun)
Finally, Dr. Shioya gave a concluding remark.
At school, you are asked how many hours you have studied, but at a company, it is meaningless unless you create value. Some companies require all employees to experience sales at least once in order to understand the needs of the field.Regardless of the type of job, it is important to proactively jump into the field and win the trust of customers.
At the end of the lecture, he concluded his lecture by saying, "In the past, sales were all about motivation and perseverance, but today, specialization and global skills are required, so I would like everyone to aim to be a professional."
