[Title of award-winning research]
Influence of seasonal changes in water quality on the treatment of acid mine drainage from Date Mine and selective removal of dissolved iron
[Details of award-winning research]
Abandoned mines in Japan still produce wastewater containing high concentrations of heavy metals, and huge costs are being spent on treating it.(Hokkaido)We investigated the seasonal changes in iron concentration and its form in mine wastewater, and the effect of each element on the precipitation behavior during the neutralization process of the mine wastewater. We also applied an aeration process that supplies oxygen to the mine wastewater, and clarified that dissolved iron can be removed without the use of neutralizing agents by the activity of iron-oxidizing bacteria.
