Relationship between distribution patterns of picophytoplankton and environmental factors in summer and winter in the mid-latitude western North Pacific

[Details of award-winning research]
We investigated the relationship between the abundance of picophytoplankton collected during summer and winter north-south transect observations in the western North Pacific Ocean conducted by our university's training ship, the Shioji Maru, and environmental factors.prochlorococcusGenus andSynechococcus The distribution of the genera shifted southward in winter compared to summer, and picoeukaryotic phytoplankton accounted for more than 34% of the total north of 50?N in winter.prochlorococcusThe cell density had the greatest influence on the distribution of the genus P. cerasifera, and tended to increase up to around 25?C, but decreased around 30?C. Further investigation is needed on this observation line to clarify the effect of rising water temperatures due to global warming on the cell density of picophytoplankton.
