[Award winner] Winner
DURAN GOEMZ Gloria Silvana (1st year doctoral student, Department of Applied Environmental Systems, Graduate School of Marine Science and Technology)

[Title of award-winning research]
Effects of subsuspension-scale eddies occurring south of Yakushima on downstream biological production

Effects of submesoscale eddies generated by the Kuroshio south of Yakushima Island on biological production in the downstream.

[Details of award-winning research]
The surface layer of the Kuroshio Current is known to be oligotrophic, but it is known that the subsurface layer, where light does not reach, functions as a nutrient stream that carries many nutrients northward downstream. However, it is still unclear whether it will be supplied to the surface layer of the southern coast of Japan. DURAN GOEMZ and his colleagues conducted multiple large-scale field observations in the Tokara Strait south of Kyushu, where the Kuroshio Current always flows over seamounts and near islands. For the first time, it has been observed on-site that a counterclockwise cold water vortex is generated, and water rich in nutrients rises up in a tongue shape at the edge of the vortex. She also reproduced this using high-resolution numerical simulations and clarified the effects on phyto-zooplankton.
