Q&A

1.About the education and research of the Faculty of Marine Resources and Environment

What are the similarities and differences between the Department of Marine Environmental Science and the Department of Marine Resources and Energy?

Both departments have one thing in common: learning basic science and environmental science related to the ocean. In addition, in the Department of Marine Environmental Science, students learn to develop science and technology for the investigation, analysis, conservation, and utilization of the marine environment and marine life. In the Department of Marine Resources and Energy, students comprehensively learn about exploration, utilization, and development methods of the ocean and seabed (including energy resources) based on the premise of environmental conservation from the perspectives of basic science and marine engineering. Although the purposes of both departments are different, there are some subjects that are common to both departments as they are related to each other.

What kind of training facilities do you have?

We have training ships such as ``Umitaka Maru'', ``Kamitaka Maru'', and ``Shioji Maru''. Additionally, there are Aquatic Science Field Education and Research Centers in Tateyama, Tomiura, and other locations. Our faculty uses these training ships and facilities for many experimental training courses, such as the "Freshman Seminar," "Oceanography Practice," and "Marine Resources and Energy Science Practice," as well as related research. Please see below for details.

-Training and reserch vessels
-Hydrosphere Science Field Education and Research Center

Will you be able to acquire the basic abilities and skills that will enable you to play an active role in the real world?

You can acquire this knowledge through lectures, seminar presentation guidance, debate exercises, data analysis methods through experiments and practical training, and report writing guidance. In addition, through practical training, students can gain direct experience that is useful in a variety of fields, such as ocean observation and ensuring the safety of shipboard activities.

What do I learn when writing my graduation thesis (graduation research)?

After obtaining research clues from past papers etc. regarding individually set research topics, students apply the basic and specialized knowledge they have acquired at university to create and implement research plans under the guidance of multiple faculty members.?Writing papers and giving oral presentations. Since each faculty member will supervise one or two fourth-year students, each student will be able to receive detailed guidance in order to explore and solve their research themes. Through the process from problem exploration to presentation of results, our goal is to develop the foundation of ability necessary for scientists and engineers involved in the observation, analysis, and prediction of various ocean phenomena, as well as ocean conservation and restoration.
