Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology

The strength of bonds that can only be achieved through small-group education.
You can learn about a wide range of fields such as biology and the marine environment.

Tomo InoueFaculty of Marine Resources and Environment, Department of Marine Environmental Science, 4th year

Q1. Why did you choose a department/faculty?
You can study diverse fields such as marine biology and the marine environment, and there is a wide range of career paths.
Since I was in middle school, I had an interest in oceans and fisheries, so I went to a highly specialized marine high school. As I deepened my studies there, I realized that I wanted to acquire even more advanced knowledge and skills at university, and through research, I learned about our university. I applied to this faculty/department because I was attracted to the fact that I could learn not only about marine life, but also the basic scientific fields of the marine environment, such as the geology, atmosphere, and ocean currents that interact with marine life. I was also attracted to the curriculum, which allowed me to obtain a curator's qualification and a fisheries teacher's license, allowing me to choose from a variety of career paths.

Q2. What was the good thing about choosing this department/faculty?
An environment where you can actively study fields of interest. Strong connections within the department
While attending marine high school, I decided to study in the marine environmental science department because I wanted to deepen my studies in a more advanced environment. In this department, you can learn not only about the ocean and biology, but also about the interaction between the ocean and chemistry, the ocean and physics, and the ocean and geology through lectures and experiments. I was able to pursue fields of interest from a variety of curricula, and I feel that this accumulation of self-selection leads to independent and motivated learning, which is useful in my research activities in my fourth year. In addition, during the onboard training, we had many opportunities to support each other, and we were able to form bonds and build close relationships as a whole department.

Q3.What is your research theme?
Aiming to elucidate the impact of microplastics on living organisms
We are researching "the current state of microplastic pollution in benthic fauna communities in estuarine tidal flats." In recent years, the leakage of microplastics into the ocean has become a problem, and we decided to investigate the ``estuary tidal flats'' because they face the ocean and are prone to accumulating man-made debris such as plastic bottles and garbage bags. In our research, we will actually go to the field to investigate how much microplastic has accumulated and whether there are differences in the amount accumulated depending on location. Furthermore, we aim to investigate how much microplastics are taken in by benthic animals such as crabs, shrimp, and shellfish, which are lower in the ecological pyramid, when they eat food, with the aim of elucidating the actual state of contamination of biological communities by microplastics.

how to spend the holidays

At an aquarium or animal cafe,
Interact with your favorite animal

I'm an indoor person, but I like interacting with living things, so when I go out I often go to aquariums or animal cafes. The photo was taken with a capybara when I went to the petting zoo the other day. Also, I especially love otters among all animals, so much so that I fill my room with otter goods, so I often go to aquariums and otter cafes to see them.

Q4.What is your ideal future image?
I want to contribute to human resource development while continuing research on the marine environment.
Through lectures and laboratory activities, I realized that research on the marine environment is an important element in our daily lives, and decided to go to graduate school and continue the research I am currently doing. Ta. The marine microplastic problem is an issue that we must continue to address in the future, and it is necessary to clarify the human damage and develop solutions. Additionally, since I was able to obtain a fisheries education staff license while attending school, I hope to be able to contribute to society in various ways in the future, including not only research activities but also human resource development.

Message to those aiming to enter Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology
At Maritime University, unlike other universities, you can meet many people who are interested in the sea and living creatures. I wasn't good at studying, but there were many people who helped me out, and I really felt the strong connections that are the strength of a small department. We provide an environment where you can thoroughly learn and explore the fields you are interested in, so please give it a try.
