To all those who will graduate or complete their studies in March 4
Speech by the president of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology in the March 5 term
(Faculty, Department of Marine Science, Graduate School)To all of you who have graduated from the Faculty of Marine Science, Faculty of Marine Life Science, Faculty of Marine Engineering, and Faculty of Marine Resources and Environment, to all of you who have completed the Department of Marine Science, and to all of you who have completed the first and second half of the doctoral course, I would like to congratulate you today. The end is approaching for measures against the new coronavirus infectious disease that has cast a shadow over our daily lives for a long time, and many of you are filled with a refreshing feeling, like a ray of light shining from the sky after the rain. Isn't it?It seems that the cherry blossoms in full bloom are celebrating everyone's new beginnings.Normally, family members and relatives would also be able to attend, but the off-campus venue that we used every year closed at the end of September last year, so this year we will be holding multiple events at the Etchujima Kaikan Auditorium. We decided to hold the graduation ceremony separately. There is some concern from the perspective of preventing infection from holding a long ceremony in this size of the auditorium. Please accept our apologies for this.
Over the past three years, you have faced many trials caused by the novel coronavirus infection, and you have spent days that did not go as planned.I think that every day was far from the student life I had imagined.Under such circumstances, I would like to express my sincere respect to all of you who have achieved the single big goal of graduation and completion of your studies. Before you stand on the new start line of your life, look back on the days you've worked hard and praise yourself today. And I would like you to share this joy with your family and friends.
By the way, the society surrounding us has changed greatly due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus infection over the past three years. We have experienced revolutionary and irreversible changes due to digital technology in familiar places such as online classes, telework, telemedicine, and digital currency.Another major change that has been attracting attention recently is the remarkable progress in AI technology based on big data.Recently, OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft's Bing AI chat function have become hot topics, and last week's news reported that GPT-4 scored in the top 10% of the U.S. Unified Bar Examination. had been taken up.Driven by my curiosity, I tried using ChatGPT, but I felt threatened that the so-called singularity, a technological turning point where AI surpasses human intelligence, is just around the corner.
When I wanted to know the details of actual AI technology, at the cyber symposium regularly held by the National Institute of Informatics in early March, Professor Sadao Kurohashi of Kyoto University said, "ChatGPT mechanism and I was blessed with the opportunity to listen to a lecture titled “Impact on Society.”As a result, I was somewhat relieved about the arrival of the singularity.Briefly, the technology used is neural natural language processing, which trains a large database of natural language, called a corpus, so that the response sentence consists of the most frequently used sequences of words. It seems that there isEach word is represented by a 3 to 1,000-dimensional vector, and in a huge semantic space that far exceeds the human language ability, the attention mechanism creates sentences with high classification accuracy. Therefore, the answers to questions become natural sentences, and the creation of computer programs is said to be good in the sense of creating a language that is easy for computers to understand. On the other hand, if incorrect or uncertain information is mixed in the learned corpus, there is a possibility of giving an incorrect answer. I also found out that there are problems called. From these problems, I was relieved that I was able to reconfirm the superiority of human beings, but we tend to believe that what many people say is correct, and that we are uncertain. When you study, you may miss the truth. Also, it is true that I have a tendency to say "I don't know" when I have studied hard. When I thought about it in this way, I realized that we humans are exactly the same.
Here, I would like to emphasize one thing about the difference between AI and humans. We can choose for ourselves what we learn. You can also revisit all angles to see if your conclusions are correct.I hope that you will acquire the ability to discern the truth, aim for what you believe is right, learn a lot with a humble attitude, and tackle the various challenges you will encounter in society. .Another advantage that humans have over AI is that they can learn from things that are not stored in a database.Through seeing, hearing, smelling, and touching, we can learn something from all things in the universe. In addition, everyone who studied at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology has learned research methods to elucidate the laws of nature and the technology to create a database of independently obtained knowledge, in other words, to write papers. In order for AI to be truly useful to society, not only computer engineers and computer programmers, but also numerous engineers and researchers who face problems that no one has yet encountered in the field and somehow derive the optimal solution. It seems that someone is needed. There are many places where you can be active.By all means, I would like everyone to use AI freely as if it were their own assistant, and take the lead in the AI/native generation.
From now on, you will row out into the vast ocean. If you face many challenges and feel difficulties, please contact your supervisor or the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology Alumni Association. We would like to support you at any time and forever.I would like to conclude my remarks with the hope that I will be able to see your smiling faces again.Reiwa 5/3/24
President of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology Toshio Iseki
congratulatory address
Congratulations to all of you who are graduating today.
This year's degree and certificate conferment ceremony will be held on a reduced scale in consideration of the spread of the new coronavirus infection.
Japan is a maritime nation surrounded by the sea, and the territory including EEZ is one of the world's largest powers. In addition to marine and fishery resources, the area is also a treasure trove of mineral resources such as methane hydrate and manganese ore on the seabed. There are things that are not.The relationship with the sea is inseparable, and the knowledge and experience learned at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, the only marine university in Japan where you can learn about the ocean, maritime affairs, and fisheries, will open up new horizons. It leads to things.
In addition, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, the predecessor of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, and Tokyo University of Fisheries both have a history of more than 100 years. They are connected and very dependable.
In the wake of the COVID-XNUMX pandemic, all countries around the world are being forced to undergo major historical changes, such as reviewing their daily lives and industrial structures.Russia's military aggression against Ukraine has had a major impact on the entire world.
We hope that you will use the knowledge and experience you have learned to play an active role in your new social life. I pray.
Finally, I would like to congratulate all of you who are graduating today on your successful departure, and I would like to conclude my remarks by wishing all of you who are here today the best of luck in your future endeavors.Reiwa 5/3/24

congratulatory address
This is hiratsuka, the chairman of the general incorporated association ocean meeting. On behalf of the alumni association, I would like to say a few words of congratulations.Originally, I should have attended the ceremony and delivered a congratulatory address in front of everyone, but due to measures to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus infection, I regret to say that this is not possible. Please forgive me for greeting you in this way.
I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of you who will be graduating from universities, advanced courses, and embarkation training courses after completing the prescribed courses at our university, and to all of you who will be conferring degrees after completing graduate school.I would like to express my heartfelt congratulations.Your hard work over the years has come to fruition, and we are here today. For graduates and graduates, I think this is the moment when you are filled with a sense of fulfillment, a sense of accomplishment, and a little bit of relief.I am sure that the families of graduates and graduates have been waiting impatiently for this day, and I am sure that they will be very happy.Congratulations again.
In the three years since the first case was reported in China at the end of 2019, the novel coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc on human society.By mid-March 2023, the number of infected people in the world has reached about 3 million, and nearly 700 million people have already died.In order to prevent the spread of infection, contact and movement of people have been greatly restricted.I believe that it had a great impact on the campus life of our graduates and graduates.Face-to-face lectures, practical training, and experiments became difficult, and measures were taken to switch to online classes for a while. rice field.I can imagine how much trouble and anxiety you must have had to face such a situation as a student or in your adolescence.
However, even in such difficult times, you were able to achieve your goal of graduation and completion.Take great pride in it and use it as food for the rest of your life.In addition, as I conveyed my congratulations to your families earlier, the support of your parents, siblings, grandparents, grandparents, relatives, etc. was indispensable in reaching this day. .There was also support from people involved in the university, including the teachers who were your teachers.Today is a day for you to celebrate your academic achievements and to thank all those involved.
Environmental issues hold the key to the society you are about to enter. Now that more than 21 years have passed since the 20st century, it has become urgent to solve environmental problems, which have been mankind's challenges since the last century.Looking back, about 50 years ago when I was studying at a mercantile marine university, environmental problems were discussed in terms of pollution and pollution. After graduating and joining a shipping company, the word "energy saving" appeared as a new word due to the oil crisis. It's getting closer.Recently, "sustainability" has become a keyword, and SGDs and ESG, which require companies to take concrete actions, are being talked about actively.
In the industrial society of the future, technological development and resource consumption that are separate from environmental issues will not be tolerated.I believe that academic research at our university is increasingly linked directly or indirectly to environmental issues.I don't think there is much room for debate about the position of the Ocean University in solving environmental problems.I hope that the techniques and practical methodologies that you have learned during your studies will be put to good use in human society.
Here, I would like to introduce the words of Sakichi Toyoda, an inventor who laid the foundation for the Toyota Group today. "Open the shoji over there. It's big outside.'It's short and simple, and I don't think it needs a detailed explanation.I would like to read that you should always open the next door and challenge the possibilities without being satisfied with maintaining the status quo.
I would like to take this opportunity to tell you something as a senior. That is "on-site principle".Things are happening on the ground. It is important to get rid of preconceived notions and preconceived notions about what happened and what is going on, and to correctly judge the situation based on the facts on the ground. On top of that, I choose the theory that should be applied correctly, make full use of it, devise countermeasures to problems, and boldly implement them.
In the dormitory song of Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine, the predecessor of our university, there is a line that says, "Children of the sea, bathed in the scent of the sea, touch the spirit of the world."This is my favorite passage. It would not be a big mistake to interpret this as a young man's spirit reaching heaven. As for the first part of the "Tide incense bath", you have to go out to the sea or ship to bathe in the tide. The children of the ocean bathed in the tide are the graduates of the University of Marine Science and Technology, and the graduates of the University of Marine Science and Technology who have been trained through practical training and experiments should not hesitate to go to the site.
The alumni association of Tokyo University of Fisheries is Rakusuikai. Also, Kaiyokai is an alumni organization that straddles both Tokyo and Kobe Mercantile Marine Universities. Both Rakusuikai and Kaiyokai were founded in the Taisho era, and each has a history of over 100 years.Over the course of its long history, the university, which traces its lineage to the former Higher Merchant Marine School and the former Fisheries Training Institute, has provided society with numerous results of advanced research and has produced many promising human resources.I hope that you will take pride in being graduated from the University of Marine Science and Technology, and that you will continue to support the university and junior students as full members of Rakusuikai and Kaiyokai. Also, when you have a problem or worry, please visit Kaiyokai or Rakusuikai.I hope you can find a solution.
I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of you on your departure, and I hope that you will continue to play an active role in society and in your studies.Thank you very much for today.Reiwa 5/3/24
