Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology Degree and Completion Ceremony for September 6
(Faculty, Department of Marine Science, Department of Marine Science, Graduate School)
President's address
Congratulations to all of you who have graduated from the undergraduate program, the Department of Marine Science and the Department of On-Board Training, the Master's and Doctoral programs at the graduate school, and to all of you who have obtained your doctorate by submitting a dissertation. I hope that you will continue to move forward steadily at your own pace, with confidence and pride in what you have learned at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology.
On the other hand, it is truly regrettable that we received the sad news of the death of a student from the on-board training course just before today's graduation ceremony. Losing a young man full of dreams and hopes just before embarking on a new journey in life is extremely saddening for our university and a great loss for society. I hope that all of you in the on-board training course will take on some of his aspirations for the sea and do your best in the marine and maritime community.
Now, all of you who are graduating today will be in a new environment, meeting new friends, working together to achieve new goals and a new mission. However, modern society is in the midst of rising energy and commodity prices due to international conflicts and environmental issues, and it can be said that society has become very stressful for many people. I would like you to do your best as members of society, but that does not mean that you should be willing to sacrifice yourself and keep running at full speed for the sake of society. When you feel stuck or helpless, I would like you to stop for a moment, calmly analyze your situation, and pay close attention to maintaining your mental health.
Two years ago, I had the opportunity to listen to a sermon by the head steward, Otani Tetsujo, at Yakushiji Temple in Nara. The content was very interesting, and I felt a sense of affinity with him because he was from Koto Ward, Tokyo, so on my way home, I bought a book written by Otani called "The Recommendation of Quiet Contemplation." "Quiet contemplation" is written as "to think quietly," and it means to stop and think carefully, putting aside your gains and losses, likes and dislikes. In everyday life, we are forced to endure something and continue to make an effort. We expect that our efforts will be properly evaluated, but in the real world, this is not always the case, and we are often disappointed. If such a situation continues, not only will stress accumulate, but we will also begin to think that the society around us that does not evaluate us is to blame, and we will fall into a negative spiral.
According to Archdeacon Otani's book, there are five demons living in our hearts.
Poverty: The desire for things, the desire to be appreciated
Anger: Feeling angry when things don't go your way
Jouko: The tendency to become cocky when flattered
Dejectedness: A depressed heart
Doubt: A suspicious mind, a reluctant mind
These demons have been present in me for a long time, and have not weakened. I'm sure they are in your hearts too. In order to avoid being controlled by these five demons, Archdeacon Otani says the following:
"When in doubt, stop and think carefully"
"When in doubt, stop and think carefully"
"When things get tough, stop and think carefully"
"When you get angry, stop and think carefully"
It is said that "quiet contemplation," or the ability to stop and think carefully, has the positive effect of calming the mind, clearing distractions, and stabilizing the mind, leading to deeper thought and awareness. I encourage anyone who is interested to give it a try.
Now, looking back at the world, the United Nations General Assembly is currently in session, and the Future Summit was held this Sunday and Monday.2015A yearCOP21The Paris Agreement and the UN SummitSDGsThe conference was held with the aim of sharing a sense of crisis in the international community and moving forward again towards solving global environmental problems, given that efforts to solve these problems have made little progress. It is said that the reason for the lack of progress in efforts to solve these problems is not only the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, but also Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the expansion of fighting between Israel and Hamas and Hezbollah, and that the Security Council has become dysfunctional due to conflicts between major powers and the excessive use of veto powers. In any case, it seems that at the root of it all, when many people gather together to form organizations or nations, the power of the five demons in people's hearts becomes enormous. It will likely take a long time for the current extremely chaotic world situation to improve, but as you all know, the solution to global environmental problems is now in a state where there is no time to wait.
I believe that most of you who graduate from our university today will be working in jobs that are not directly related to global environmental issues. However, as members of society, I believe that in the future, all of you will be involved in solving major global issues. So, my request is that you all remember that you are graduates of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, whose motto is "Know the ocean, protect the ocean, and use the ocean," and that you are part of a group of researchers and engineers who understand the ocean better than anyone else. And I hope that you will use the knowledge and skills you have acquired at our university to the fullest in your respective positions. You may encounter enormous challenges. When that happens, I hope that you will practice "quiet contemplation" and overcome the challenges while achieving good physical, mental, and social conditions, that is, well-being.
Finally, our university would like to support all of you who are working hard in society at any time and forever. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your supervisor or the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology Alumni Association. Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology is always looking forward to being of help to you.
