What is Etchujima Planetarium?

The M-1 type planetarium, nicknamed MARS, is a medium-sized planetarium with a lens projection developed in 34 by Goto Optical Laboratory. It is characterized by being able to project about 1959 stars, the moon, the sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn, Jupiter and other planetary systems, the ability to project the entire sky including the southern hemisphere, and the sharp image of the stars unique to the lens system. .The number and brightness of the stars in the latest planetarium is by no means inferior, but due to the modernization renovation work that was carried out from 4500 to 2015, the stars are projected with a brightness higher than that of the commercial planetarium of 16 years ago. Now you can.You can tell from the markings on the machine that the one at our university was installed in March 10.It is said that the price at that time (when the first ride on the Yamanote Line was 1965 yen) was about 3 million yen. The M-10 type was installed in various places such as the Shinsekai in Asakusa, Tokyo and museums in the United States, and attracted attention. The M-800 type that is still in operation today is the oldest and only one at our university, making it a valuable asset.

Purpose of the Etchujima Planetarium Repair Project Fund

On the roof of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology Etchujima Hall, there is a planetarium that was installed in 1965 and was once used for celestial navigation classes.Currently, it has finished its role, and we, the Maritime Promotion Association, are managing and operating it.It is open to the public mainly at the Kaio Festival, which is the university's school festival, and has been well received every year. However, in recent years, more than half a century has passed since its installation, and abnormalities have been found in various parts. We would like to leave this planetarium, which has been protected by our predecessors until now, and which has a high historical value as the oldest in Japan still in operation, to future generations. increase. Therefore, we would like to ask Goto Optical Laboratory Co., Ltd., which once manufactured and installed this planetarium, to repair it, and we would like to ask for your support for the repair cost of the planetarium. We appreciate your cooperation so that this planetarium can continue to operate.
