A Career Path Seminar for Female Students was Held on Etchujima Campus (7/25)
2014.08.26
On July 2014, 7 (Friday), we held a "Career Path Seminar for Female Students" at the Etchujima Campus (Etchujima Kaikan 25F Seminar Room).
Every year, this “Career Path Seminar for Female Students” is held on the same day as the Open Campus. This year as well, it was held on the same day as the summer open campus of the Faculty of Marine Engineering.
This year, the theme was "a seminar for female students who want to learn about and work on the sea" and consisted of two parts: a lecture and a group discussion. In the first half of the lecture, three women who are currently active in maritime and ocean-related organizations (Ms. Megumi Shionari from the National Maritime Research Institute, Ms. Mitsuyo Iate from Nippon Yusen Kaisha, Ltd., and Miho Sekiguchi from the Department of Ocean Engineering Associate Professor) came and gave a lecture.
First, Mr. Shiokari gave a speech titled "Let's imagine your future," and talked about his career from his student days to the present, his path to choosing a science course, and his current career related to the sea. We talked mainly about.Reflecting on her own experience, she said, "From now on, more and more women are expected to play an active role. Especially in my school days, when I can do various things that I like and am interested in. I'm sure it will be useful in some way, so let's challenge more and more." I received a powerful message.
Next, Mr. Saite, a graduate of the university and a first engineer, spoke on the subject, "What does it mean for women to work in society?"She also introduced the details of her current job and her thoughts as a working mom who balances work and childcare.Because women are now active in industries that were once thought to be men's jobs, it has become important to balance childcare and work. For that reason, I received a message of encouragement that I want you to be aware of things that you can notice only because you are a woman, not because you are a woman, in order to create an environment where you can continue to work on your own.
The third person is Associate Professor Sekiguchi of our university. He talked about his career up to the present day and why he chose to pursue this research field. In addition to his specialized content, he talked about his work after arriving at the university and the difficulty of balancing childcare with education and research. Finally, "Even if you think you don't like something now, it might be the bud of what you love later, so try picking up even a little bit of interest. Enjoy what you can do now without worrying about it later. I think that the participants were very encouraged by receiving advice that they could immediately put into practice.
In the second half, we were divided into three groups and held a free talk-style social gathering, "Let's talk about campus life and job hunting with seniors!"
The lecturers were astonished by the unusually specific questions such as why they chose a university, worries about job hunting, and what they should study to become an engineer.
Participants commented that it was very helpful to hear stories from seniors who are working in the professions they were interested in, that they were glad that they were able to solve their doubts, and that they would like to hear from navigators as well. We have received your feedback.
We would like to thank all the undergraduate and graduate students, as well as high school students who wish to study at our university and their parents, for their participation.
