On November 2019, 11 (Tuesday), at the lecture room on the 19st floor of the Shirataka Building on the Shinagawa Campus, a symposium commemorating the 1th anniversary of the Declaration of Action for Gender Equality at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, titled "Now and in the future, we live together with the sea." "has been held. With this year marking the 10th anniversary of the “Declaration of Action for Gender Equality,” Part 10 will be held under the theme of “Looking Back on the Past 10 Years.” We invited Vice President Chisato Miyaura from the university and Keiko Nishio, director of the Tokyo Minato Ward Gender Equality Promotion Center "Libra", to give a lecture on diversity promotion. The second part consisted of a two-part panel discussion between the speakers and the faculty members of the university.Ms. Fujimori, coordinator of the Organization for Women Researchers, acted as moderator.

At the beginning, President Toshiro Takeuchi made opening remarks and gave a presentation on the outline of the promotion of gender equality at our university. After that, Vice President Miyaura of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology gave a talk titled "Promotion of Diversity at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology."She also explained various initiatives to support female researchers and the projects of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, which has many achievements, as well as gender equality in Japan, especially the current situation and challenges of female researchers at universities.Various efforts to increase the number of female students at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, which has biology and engineering departments like our university, were unique and very informative.

The second lecture was given by Mr. Nishio, Director of Libra, Minato Ward, on "Promotion of Gender Equality in Minato Ward."We will introduce the facilities and events of Libra, which is a core facility for promoting gender equality in the region, and hold events, various courses and seminars that are expected to be used by people who belong to many schools and companies in Minato Ward. He talked about the importance of continuing to disseminate information on gender equality throughRecently, the SDGs have been consciously communicated, and as one of the universities in Minato Ward, he also mentioned his expectations for the university.Next, Director Hamada reported on the female researcher support project at the university, ending Part XNUMX.

After a break, in the second part, a panel discussion was held between the faculty members of the university and the speakers on the theme of "Thinking about what we should do in the future."From our university, two faculty members who have experience using the RS system (Professor Haruko Hidai (Professor, Department of Ocean Policy and Culture, Faculty of Marine Life Science), Associate Professor Takayuki Katagiri (Associate Professor, Department of Marine Bioresources, Faculty of Marine Life Science) and Kentaro Tanaka (Associate Professor, Department of Marine Electronics and Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Ocean Engineering), Deputy Director of the Organization for Women Researchers, participated in a discussion with six panelists, moderated by Associate Professor Tomomi Namatame of the Organization for Women Researchers. (Associate Professor, Department of Distribution Information Engineering, Faculty of Ocean Engineering) served.

The panel discussion proceeded with the theme of creating a diversity environment from a broader perspective on the effects of initiatives and ideas for improvement.First, the moderator, who is also a user of the "RS system," spoke about reasons for using the system and usability, followed by comments and opinions from other experienced users.Regarding the expansion of this support project, which is currently limited to female researchers, an opinion was expressed that "when and what kind of support is needed depends on the convenience, situation, and environment of each individual." , Opinions were exchanged on how to deal with and think about life events other than childbirth and childcare. In addition, regarding the creation of a diverse environment, it is important to promote awareness reform to the level that it is natural to incorporate diversity awareness in order to write high-impact papers in the promotion of education and research at science universities. With regard to gender equality, which is changing with the times, there was an opinion that raising awareness of unconscious bias in the field of education may be an issue for the future.

Finally, Vice President Ruri Shoji, head of the Office for the Promotion of Gender Equality, said, "I learned about efforts to increase the number of female researchers by learning from other universities' cases. I would like to proceed with this project and make it a more effective support project.”

There were about 70 participants from inside and outside the university, including the faculty and staff of the university. There were many male faculty members participating in the survey, and there were comments such as "I didn't know about the initiative, but I think that focusing on supporting female researchers will lead to an appeal to researchers and female students." We were able to share time with the participants to think about what we should do in the future. In addition, it was a very meaningful symposium that revealed new issues that should be considered in the future, such as the necessity of establishing an organizational backup system for universities.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who came to visit us.thank you very much.
