- Q What kind of research did you do at Tokyo University of Fisheries (now University of Marine Science and Technology) when you were a student?
↓
- I did completely different research during my 4th year undergraduate studies and my 1 years master's course. In my fourth year, I was researching enzymes related to sugar metabolism in fish, and in my master's course, I was researching nutrients necessary for fish to produce aquaculture feed.Simply put, my research on enzymes involved extracting and analyzing specific enzymes from fish livers. It was an experiment that took a lot of time to extract and analyze, but I paired up with a classmate and got so absorbed in it that I lost track of time.It was only one year of research, but I was able to produce the research results of three papers, so it was a very fulfilling graduation research.
- Q What inspired you to become a researcher?
↓
- Ever since I was a child, I've admired the way people experiment in white coats. One is his father. His father worked in a company's research lab and would sometimes take him to work.At that time, I thought it was cool to see him wearing a white coat. When thinking about going to college, Robert Koch※ 2and Shibasaburo Kitasato※ 3I want to know the achievements of bacteriologists, and I want to do research too!I'm starting to think strongly.Once I actually started my graduation research, I really enjoyed being able to experiment on my own.Go wherever you can for research! With that in mind, I went on to become a researcher.
*2 Robert Koch (1843-1910) German doctor and bacteriologist. In addition to discovering anthrax, tuberculosis, and cholera, he also established methods for culturing bacteria and staining bacteria, thus laying the foundation for modern bacteriological testing.
*3 Shibasaburo Kitasato (1853-1931) Japanese physician and bacteriologist. He succeeded in culturing the tetanus bacilli in a pure culture, discovered immune antibodies against the toxin, and established serum therapy using the antibodies. He laid the foundation of modern Japanese medicine.
- Q: Of all the research that you have conducted as a researcher, what has left a particularly strong impression on you?
↓
- I love discovering and trying new things.I've done a lot of research, but there are two that left a particularly strong impression on me.The first is research on what kind of food should be given to juvenile fish produced from seed and seedlings to make them grow healthier and bigger. revealed for the first time. The other is research that examines the behavior of fish under microgravity, with the goal of deploying a closed-loop land-based aquaculture system in space. In order to create a microgravity state, we put a water tank on the aircraft and boarded it together to conduct an experiment.Even now, I am very grateful that I was able to carry out such an experiment, as it was an experiment that could not have been done with the facilities of the university.
- Q What is the background to the establishment of the new faculty (Faculty of Marine Resources and Environment)?
↓
- Ever since the University of Marine Science and Technology was founded, we faculty and staff have always believed that, although each university had only one faculty, "2021 plus 3 is not XNUMX (we can grow much bigger)."Therefore, from the beginning, I had the desire to create a new faculty. The Faculty of Marine Resources and Environment is a rare faculty in Japan where you can learn the basics of oceanography while simultaneously studying ocean conservation and ocean development. When the new faculty was established, I predicted that Japan's marine industry would develop vigorously, but I feel that there is still a long way to go. In March XNUMX, the first graduates of the Faculty of Marine Resources and Environment will depart for society, so I have great expectations for their future success.
- Q Why did you focus on global education, such as making TOEIC scores a requirement for advancing to the next grade?
↓
- My own study abroad experience is a great motivation for this. After graduating from graduate school, I studied abroad in Canada for three years from 1984 to 1986.By studying abroad, coming into contact with foreign cultures, and interacting with researchers
?How much do you know about Japan where you were born and raised?
?How important it is to see things from a broader perspective
That's what I realized. Therefore, I want students to naturally have an international perspective, and provide many opportunities to gain global experiences such as cross-border exchanges and study abroad, and develop students who look not only at Japan but also overseas. This feeling led to the expansion of global education. Also, although Ocean University is a relatively small university, the percentage of international students enrolled in the graduate school is high, and it ranks within the top 10 among national universities.I would like students to gain global experience without being particular about the form of study abroad.
Another thing that shocked me when I studied abroad in Canada at the time was how women work. Many women worked as managers in laboratories and seed production sites. At that time, at Tokyo University of Fisheries, the percentage of women studying at the university was steadily increasing, but at that time, I felt that Japan still lacked employment opportunities and a working environment compared to men. From this experience, I have always had the feeling that universities must change, and in 2009, I was involved in the establishment of the Office for the Promotion of Gender Equality (Office Umi Nami, Organization for Supporting Women Researchers) as its first director.
Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology Gender Equality Promotion Office Uminami net - QWhat is Vision2027?How did you come to create it?
↓
- Vision2027 is the future image of the University of Marine Science and Technology created in 2015 from a medium- to long-term perspective. It was reviewed in 3, three years after its creation, and now ver.2018 has been released.National university corporations make medium-term goals and plans every six years.Right around the time I became the president of the university, I was making the third medium-term goals and plans. At that time, the Etchujima Campus (former Tokyo Shosen Campus) and the Shinagawa Campus (former Tokyo University of Fisheries) were not keeping pace, as they were still pre-merger.Therefore, in order to unify and create the future of the university from a longer-term perspective, I became the originator, and in 2, I created a vision called Vision 6, looking 2015 years into the future, and tried to visualize the future. rice field. We have set up a new management planning office within the secretariat, where we have created a PCDA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) system to see if the university is making efforts to achieve Vision 12 every year. It is working. Etchujima Campus Shinagawa Campus
- Q What kind of university do you want Ocean University to be in 2030 and beyond?
↓
- In 2030, it will be a marine university beyond Vision2027.As indicated by the philosophy of the University of Marine Science and Technology, which is to “contribute to the sustainable development of human society, we conduct basic and applied education and research related to science and technology related to the study of the ocean.” I hope that it will be a useful frontier for research related to the ocean. I hope that the three faculties will lead research in Japan and the world in their respective fields.
- Q Does the term "research frontier" mean conducting cutting-edge research and producing results?
↓
- I don't think that research at a marine university is necessarily good if the result of making a great scientific discovery and being published in an authoritative academic journal is not necessarily good.Under the philosophy of the University of Marine Science and Technology, which I introduced earlier, I would like each faculty and department to lead research that is valuable to society. Not only basic research but also applied research is actively carried out at Marine University, and I think this is very important. As a university that conducts research and education on a wide range of oceans, I hope that it will produce and implement results that contribute to society while working closely with ocean-related companies, industries, and society.
- Q To students who will study at Marine University and leave the nest
↓
- The University of Marine Science and Technology has accumulated a huge amount of research results and know-how related to the ocean, maritime affairs, and fisheries. From these, I want you to become a person who can learn from the past, look to the future, and predict the future.I also hope that they will develop a broader perspective and be able to respond sensitively to the changes of the times.
